CARTOGRAPHY

The Western Ghats (c.2013)

This map, which took about 25 days to complete and was included in a book on India’s Western Ghats titled Gems of the Western Ghats (2014), was a learning experience. By studying the landscape digitally mile by mile, the sheer sprawl of India’s jungle heartland becomes apparent even as we simultaneously observe its utter fragility in the face of relentless human encroachment into the wilderness.

Biafra (November 2011)

This map was created for an as-of-yet unfinished book on the Biafran (pronounced Bee-afran) war of secession, otherwise known as the Nigerian civil war, which was fought from July 1967 to January 1970. Fighting against overwhelming odds, the Biafrans were ultimately crushed, and the region, rich with oil, was reincorporated into the Nigerian federation, although in recent years, angered by corruption in the federal government and environmental abuses by oil companies, the territory is once again clamoring for independence.
